Steph's Tips on Reducing that Wedding Planning Stress
Hiya bab!
No one can deny that planning a wedding is stressful. There is no other time in your life (thankfully) you have to do so much research, have so many spreadsheets, become a designer and manage all your friends and family! I’m not going to tell you, there’s a magic trick to make the stress disappear completely, but I definitely have tips to reduce this stress for you.
So, as a Birmingham wedding photographer, I am going to tell you Steph’s tips on reducing that wedding planning stress.

Focus on What Really Matters
People will remember how much fun they had and how many questionable dance moves they pulled off, so here some advice on reducing that wedding planning stress…
For starters, the atmosphere is everything. Think about the vibe you want – laid-back BBQ? Big ol’ party in a barn? Fancy knees-up and cocktail in the city? Whatever it is, lean into it. Don’t waste your time worrying about the little things you won’t remember on the day; just make sure there’s enough food, drinks, and tunes to keep everyone, including you two, happy.
Next, make it personal. Forget trying to impress everyone else – this is your big day, so do it your way. Love pizza? Have pizza. Hate cheesy wedding playlists? Sack off old school wedding DJ blasting ABBA megamix and book that saxophonist! Go for something that actually gets you excited.
The more it feels like you, the more your guests will love it – and you won’t spend the whole day worrying about what other people think.
And here’s a big one…as a couple, decide what the most important parts of your day are – the photography, the food, the music, the cocktails, whatever matters most to you. These are your non-negotiables. Focus your energy (and budget) there, and let the rest just fall into place.
And finally, create moments you want to remember. If your grand parents mean the world to you, why not have a special dance with them. If your brother is an amazing mixologist, have him create a Pisco Sour hour (this actually happened). These are touches that don’t have to cost you anything, but will mean the world to you when you look back at your wedding photos.
No one’s going to talk about the key shaped bottle open they got as a wedding favour, but they will remember celebrating you two in the special way you wanted to. It’s your wedding, have it your way!
Wedding Budget Tips
The word “budget” makes most couples break out in a sweat, but it doesn’t need to be scary. We all have budgets, whether we’re planning a wedding or a food shop, and the trick is knowing what matters most to you.
Start with your non-negotiables. For most couples, that’s the big things like photography, videography, food, and music – the parts of the day that actually make it memorable to you. Once you’ve nailed those, you can relax a bit knowing the essentials are covered.
And here’s the fun part. If you’ve got anything left over at the end, that’s where you can add in the extras. Think surprise Mariachi band to liven up the drinks reception, putting money behind the bar to keep the party buzzing, or even upgrading those honeymoon plans so you’ve got something epic to look forward to after the wedding day.
The point is, a budget isn’t about restrictions – it’s about making sure the money you spend actually creates the experience you want.
Tips for a Stress-Free (ish) Wedding Party
Right, so now we know what not to worry about, let’s chat about how to actually enjoy the process without feeling like you’re on the verge of a breakdown.
Here are a few top tips on reducing that wedding planning stress, straight from me to you:
Invest in the right wedding suppliers
You’ll never regret hiring the right suppliers as they’re the people who turn your ideas into reality and keep the whole day running smoothly. If you’ve got a vision for your decor, a stylist can bring it to life (without you spending hours scrolling Pinterest) and trust me, a stylist can be cheaper than DIY and a lot less stress!
The same goes for your venue – choose somewhere with a team you actually connect with, so you know you’ll be looked after.
A good florist will not only create your dream arrangements but also guide you on what’s in season when you get married.
Surround yourself with the right people and the planning becomes way less stressful and way more exciting!
Remember what’s important to you
It’s so easy to get carried away when Pinterest and Instagram are overflowing with picture-perfect weddings. But here’s the thing…your day isn’t about ticking off every trend, it’s about you and that starts with reducing that wedding planning stress.
Don’t stress over what you think you “should” have or feel FOMO over someone else’s wedding. Focus on what actually matters to you as a couple, and your day will be unforgettable for all the right reasons.
Plan ahead
I know it’s tempting to wing it, but trust me, a bit of planning goes a long way. Write a list, set yourself deadlines, and stick to them. And don’t leave stuff till the last minute, because no one wants to be hot crafting at 2am the night before their wedding.
Take a breather
Wedding planning can feel all-consuming, but it’s important to step back every now and then and remind yourself why you’re doing this. It’s about celebrating you two, your love and starting the next chapter of your lives together.
So don’t forget to take a moment to just enjoy it.
Have a laugh. Things will go wrong. It’s inevitable. The flowers might wilt, the weather might turn, and your best man’s speech might be slightly inappropriate. But at the end of the day, none of that matters. As long as you’ve got each other, you’ve nailed it. Remember, weddings are perfectly imperfect!
